New and Noteworthy in Non-Fiction: Our November Mini-Conference Plans

At the most recent MRC meeting, plans were excitedly made for the November 6 mini-conference. The group decided that the theme “New and Noteworthy in Non-Fiction” was fitting for the prospective attendees’ interests, the presenters’ expertise, and the current issues in Reading Education. Mike McKenna, UVA Faculty and leading reading researcher and author, will keynote the event. Dr. McKenna’s most recent publication, Cracking the Common Core, fits well with the theme, as do his other books and research. The group had many ideas for related breakout sessions, ranging from ELL strategies to new offerings from the PALS office and thoroughly covering the full range from K through 12.

The MRC is glad to be co-hosting the event with the Curry Educational Council in Bavaro Hall on grounds. The conference will be held from 3-6pm on Thursday, November 6 and will include free parking for educators and free attendance for students and MRC members. We will be sending out a form to sign up for the conference in October and hope that the timing and content of the event lead to great attendance!
